AWWA News
Grants from NHDES and MEDEP will support AWWA's work to reduce pollution from roads and residential properties and continue our educational programs for the communities.
We are enhancing our "AWWA in the Schools" programs and will be busy with the students at the Wakefield Paul School and Acton Elementary School this spring.

2011 Youth Conservation Corps When someone says “summer” in the lakes region of Wakefield, NH and Acton, ME many think of boating, fishing, water-skiing, kayaking, and the many other activities that go along with summer on pristine lakes. For AWWA and eight local youths ranging from 16 to 21, it means protecting those lakes from an unseen culprit to water quality…phosphorus and sediment.
The Acton Wakefield Watersheds Alliance (AWWA) has completed its 6th Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) season and done so in an impressive fashion. For seven weeks during the summer, 6 crew members and 2 crew leaders spend their days constructing landscaped features that prevent runoff from rain storms and spring snowmelt from causing erosion on the land that leads to sediment and, ultimately phosphorus, entering the lakes. It is this phosphorus that can lead to algal blooms, decreased water clarity, oxygen depletion of bottom water and in extreme cases fish kills and very green lakes.
In 2011, the crew had 28 days to work through as many projects as possible. Through their diligent hard work, the YCC was able to complete 21 projects on 7 lakes in the region. The 21 projects tied a record number of projects that the AWWA YCC has done. On these 21 project host sites, the crew installed 91 Best management Practices (BMPs; landscaped features) that are designed to prevent runoff carrying phosphorus and sediment from entering the lakes. The 91 BMPs set a new high for features installed in a season. The 91 BMPs that were installed are preventing 46 tons of sediment per year and 39 lbs of phosphorus per year from entering the lakes, which is an awesome feat! In addition to the 21 project host sites that work was completed on, 33 home and property owners received technical assistance and site designs that they can use to prevent runoff issues on their property.
The 2011 YCC season has been a fantastic success that could not have happened without the work of the YCC crew: Ryan Fabian, Jordan Shepherd, Katelyn Nichols, Chloe Routhier, Seth Fogg, and Dylan Nichols, the YCC crew leaders: Anthony Stanton and Sam Wilson and the support of the AWWA board and director as well as the support from the local community and homeowners.
